Scope and Contents of the Materials
Includes three boxes of research, correspondence, manuscripts, and other notes pertaining to Louise Stotlzfus’ work and particularly her work on Amish and Mennonite women. In the first box there are materials relating to Amish Women and Two Amish Folk Artists as well as a few short stories and lectures she gave. Folders 50-53 in Box 1 are communications Stoltzfus exchanged with people either through email or letters. Boxes 2 and 3 focus on Quiet Shouts with Box 2 containing general information and Box 3 focusing on specific women featured in the book.
Collection Historical Note
Louise Stoltzfus was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and was raised in an Old Order Amish family. A freelance writer and editor, she was the author of several books including: The Central Market Cookbook, Traces of Wisdom, Amish Women and the Pursuit of Life's Simple Pleasures, Plain Business, Recipes from Central Market, Lancaster County Cookbook, Favorite Recipes from Quilters, A Quilters Christmas Cookbook, The Best of Mennonite Fellowship Meals, The Story of Philhaven, Two Amish Folk Artists: The Story of Henry Lapp and Barbara Ebersol, and Quiet Shouts: Stories of Lancaster Mennonite Women Leaders. Stoltzfus was the former curator of The People's Place Quilt Museum and director of the People's Place Gallery, Intercourse, PA. In the 1970s, she taught in a one-room Amish school for three years. Stoltzfus earned a degree in English literature in 1987 from the University of Southern Florida. She was a member of Blossom Hill Mennonite Church.
