Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains several items pertaining to the life and career of S. Clyde Weaver, founder of S. Clyde Weaver Inc. Several advertising cards announce Weaver’s preaching or special meetings, and various Church of the Brethren service programs list Weaver as a speaker. Other advertising cards and programs detail evangelist meetings and services, but do not include Weaver as a speaker. Other papers include loose sheets of notes made by Weaver on Bible verses and the addresses of other individuals. Business concerning the Church of the Brethren’s daily operations and membership is included. A few pieces of correspondence include a greeting card from the Young Family and a political speech. Four notebooks are part of the collection, with three belonging to Weaver and one belonging to Elam Weaver. Within the notebooks are notes and records of the sermons and business at various Church of the Brethren congregations. Two editions of The Cokesbury Marriage Manual from 1933 and 1945 have been annotated by Weaver. Several ceramic artifacts are included with the collection: two blue spatterware bowls, two blue spatterware plates, and two white mugs with a floral design.

Collection Historical Note

S. Clyde Weaver was born on May 23, 1901, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Elam and Fannie Young Weaver. He married Emma Weaver in 1920, with whom he had four children. Weaver was the founder and owner of S. Clyde Weaver Inc., a successful meat and cheese shop in East Petersburg, Pennsylvania. He began the business in 1920 and operated it until 1951, at which time he sold the business to a son-in-law. Weaver was a minister for the East Petersburg Church of the Brethren for 49 years and later a member of the Hempfield Church of the Brethren. He served as moderator for the Eastern District of the Pennsylvania Church of the Brethren, attending over 300 conferences in five states. In addition, Weaver was an elder-in-charge at the Ephrata, Reading, and Bareville Churches of the Brethren. He was a trustee of the Brethren Village and a trustee emeritus of Elizabethtown College, serving the College beginning in 1958. Weaver passed away in September 1983 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
