Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains items related to Henry and Mary L. Horst and their extended family. Materials span several decades, from 1865-1976, and include a cross stitch sampler made for Henry Horst by and aunt in 1865. The original marriage certificate and envelope from the 1882 marriage of Henry Horst and Mary Long is part of the collection. Also included is the wedding frock coat worn by Horst, manufactured by McLilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio. Postcards include a wide variety of images sent to and from various members of the extended Horst family. Postcards feature images of Elizabethtown College, Camp Swatara, Brethen church buildings and headquarters, and general images of cities such as Topeka, Kansas; Brooklyn, New York; Pasadena, California; and Chicago, Illinois. Also included in postcard format is an invitation to Henry Horst to the dedication of the new Pennsylvania capitol building in Harrisburg in 1906. Correspondents include Henry Horst, Walter Bachman, Frances Cassel, Frank Weber, Laban Wenger, Sam Horst, Minnie Hostetter, Nancy Horst, Nancy Bachman, Mabel Horst, Nancy Wenger, and Henry Wenger.

Collection Historical Note

Henry Horst was born on December 14, 1859, to Henry and Anna Bucher Horst in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In the 1889 census, Horst was employed working in a mill. He married Mary Long in 1882, with whom he had five children. For much of his life, Horst worked at and ran Horst’s Feed Mill. By the 1900 census, Horst was listed as a farmer, and by 1910 he was working as both a farmer and a miller. In the 1920 census, Horst was listed as a farmer. He was a member of the Midway Church of the Brethren. Horst passed away in October 1926 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. 

Mary Long Horst was born on February 23, 1865, to Amos and Veronica Snavely Long in Annville, Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census, at fifteen years old, she was employed as a servant. She married Henry Horst in 1882, with whom she had five children. Horst was a member of the Midway Church of the Brethren. She passed away in June 1940 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
