This collection contains three women’s prayer coverings from members of the Skippack Church of the Brethren. One prayer covering is cream-colored, made from a silky fabric and produced by Stephen L. Stetson. A black head covering is made from a velvet-textured fabric, with a small button attached to the top. This head covering has a name label reading “Joy K.” and was produced by the C.E. Ward Company. Another black head covering in the collection is made from the same velvet-like material and was produced by the C.E. Ward Company, but does not have a name label.

Collection Historical Note

The Skippack Church of the Brethren began as part of the larger Mingo congregation, which began meeting in 1815 in the home of John Detwiler. Between 1854-1858, the first meetinghouse was constructed for the Mingo congregation. Over time, the growth of the local community necessitated the splitting of the Mingo Church of the Brethren, creating the Skippack Church of the Brethren in 1957. Today, the church is known as Skippack Church and is located in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.
